Kathmandu, Nepal
The Upper Mustang Trek is one of Nepal's most unique and culturally rich trekking experiences, offering an opportunity to explore a semi-autonomous region of Nepal, often referred to as the "last forbidden kingdom." The trek takes you through a stunning landscape resembling a high-altitude desert, with ancient Tibetan culture, monasteries, and dramatic landscapes of cliffs, caves, and wind-swept valleys. Located in the rain-shadow of the Annapurna range, Upper Mustang is a region that was closed to outsiders until 1992, which has helped preserve its traditions and culture.
Restricted Area: You need a special permit to trek in Upper Mustang, which helps protect the region’s cultural and natural heritage.
Tibetan Culture: Upper Mustang is heavily influenced by Tibetan culture, and trekkers can explore ancient monasteries, Tibetan Buddhist shrines, and the unique architecture of the region’s villages.
Scenic Beauty: The landscapes are a mixture of rocky desert terrain, deep river valleys, and the towering peaks of the Himalayas. The area is also rich in unique flora and fauna.
Lo Manthang: The capital of Upper Mustang, this walled city is a historical and cultural gem, home to traditional Tibetan-style architecture, monasteries, and local Tibetan communities.
Ancient Caves and Paintings: Visit the centuries-old Tiji Festival site and explore ancient cave dwellings and centuries-old murals and paintings in places like Luri Gompa.
Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November) are the best seasons for the trek, offering clear skies and moderate temperatures.
Summer (June to August) can bring monsoon rains to the lower regions, but Upper Mustang remains in the rain-shadow and is often still accessible.
Winter (December to February) can be quite harsh with extreme cold and possible snow blocking some trails.
Restricted Area Permit: The trek requires a special Upper Mustang Permit issued by the Nepal Government, which can only be obtained through a registered trekking agency. The permit is valid for a limited number of days.
TIMS (Trekkers’ Information Management System): This permit is mandatory for all trekkers in Nepal, including Upper Mustang.
Guide and Porter Fees: Hiring a guide and porter is mandatory in Upper Mustang. Most trekking companies include these costs in the trek price.
The Upper Mustang Trek is considered a moderate to challenging trek. While it doesn't require technical climbing skills, it involves trekking at high altitudes, often above 3,000m. Trekking for 5-7 hours a day, over rocky terrain, can be physically demanding. A good level of fitness and previous trekking experience will help make the journey smoother.
Clothing: Pack warm clothes, including thermal layers, windproof jackets, and gloves. The region can be cold, especially at night.
Footwear: Comfortable trekking boots with sturdy soles for rocky terrain.
Sunscreen and Sunglasses: Due to the high altitude and sunny days, protect yourself from UV rays.
Water Bottle: Refillable water bottles are essential. Water purification tablets or filters are recommended.
Personal Medications: Carry any necessary prescription medicines, along with a basic first-aid kit.

The Upper Mustang Trek is considered moderate in difficulty, but it does require good physical fitness due to long days of walking at high altitudes (3,000m and above). While technical skills are not necessary, prior trekking experience is recommended.
Yes, there is a risk of altitude sickness as the trek reaches over 4,000 meters (in areas like Lo Manthang and the pass). It’s essential to acclimatize properly by resting at high altitudes and drinking plenty of water. Our itinerary includes rest days to help with this.
You’ll need to bring personal items like trekking boots, a sleeping bag, and clothing suitable for cold weather, but most trekking agencies provide other essentials like duffel bags, maps, and sometimes a sleeping bag if required. A packing list will be provided in advance.
The trek typically takes 12-14 days, depending on the itinerary, and includes both trekking and rest days. The trek can be shortened or extended based on your preference.
Wi-Fi is available in some areas, but it may be slow and expensive. Charging electronic devices is also possible in a few lodges, but you'll likely need to pay extra for it.
The Upper Mustang Trek was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The landscapes were absolutely surreal, like something out of a movie – endless deserts, towering mountains, and the ancient walled city of Lo Manthang was a highlight. The trek wasn’t too physically demanding, but the altitude was definitely something to be mindful of. Our guide was very experienced, and the locals were welcoming and friendly. I’m so glad I had the chance to see such an untouched part of Nepal!
